A Crepe Birthday


My friend Daniel celebrated his birthday last Friday. So we had a get together at my house. It was mostly the old Bean Team (all the people that lived in our house on Bean Ave), and my mom was there too. I wanted to make him a birthday cake, but he is literally the best baker I know, and the idea of making him a cake that he could make better was not very appealing. So I did something totally different, that he would never make, in hopes that it would be a fun departure from what he's used to. So....I made a cake out of crepes!
Not to brag, but I do make a pretty mean crepe. My aunt in France gave me some great pointers last time I was there, and I have finally acquired a "feel" for making them. My grand creation was a strawberry and Nutella layered crepe cake, with home made bourbon caramel sauce, and home made Irish coffee (made with whiskey, creme, and coffee) ice cream on top. The only hiccup was that I didn't know you aren't supposed to refrigerate Nutella, but luckily mom came to the rescue and fixed it while I made crepes. It's a tough cake in the sense that you can't really make it ahead of time (I did a test run a couple days before, and it tasted no-so-great after it had been in the frig overnight). It needs to be fresh, so I had to make it right then. But it didn't take too long, and it was fun to put it together.
For what it lacked in finished appearance, I think it made up for in flavor. And best of all, I think Daniel liked it:) I don't have a picture of the sliced cake from the actual birthday, so I am showing a slice of the "prototype" I did a couple days before. It wasn't as good, and the caramel was grainy, but it will give you an idea. The final product was much better;)

Spare Me!

I enjoy cooking. I love it actually (this seems to shock my mother every time I say it). If you have ever seen the Disney Pixar movie Ratatouille (which I watched twice yesterday!), I am like Remy, the cute little rat with an insatiable love of food, particularly cheese, and Paris. I am fascinated by the millions of creative food combinations that are possible. And when you combine that with the scientist in me that loves to experiment...well, my kitchen becomes my laboratory and I make some pretty..."inventive" stuff.
Sometimes my experiments center around what I can combine with what. Like can I put honey in a vinaigrette? Or grilled broccoli with pineapple? Can I combine a honey-viniagrette with grilled broccoli and pineapple?! Then sometimes it's about where I can use certain foods and spices. Can I put pepper in ice cream? (Answer is no by the way.) Can I put hot dogs in crepes? What about apples in shis-kabobs? Then sometimes it's just about cooking something I've never tried before, like my pie the other day, or some hither-to-unknown vegetable, or in this specific case, short ribs.
This past weekend I tried one of the most time consuming recipes I've ever attempted. And I started out using an actual recipe. And it was a disaster. This all came about, by the way, because I found a nice pack of short ribs on sale at the store the other day and decided to give it a try. (This is how many of my culinary adventures begin. I see some weird thing in the store or at the market and think "Hu. What in the heck is this? I don't know...it looks sketchy....but I'm totally going to by it and figure out how to cook it!")
I had to cut veggies, cook them, puree them, braise the ribs take them out of the pan, then make a sauce. Wine, tomato sauce, thyme, bay leaves etc. The sauce alone required mixing, boiling, reducing, simmering, more reducing. After which I added the meat back in...cooking longer..forever practically...and then finally when I tasted it it was...horrible!
It was really bitter for some reason. I guess I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally considered it inedible. I threw it in the crock pot and went for a run to think of what I could do to salvage my hard work. I opted to add brown sugar, a squeeze of honey, and some hazelnut coffee that was left in the pot from breakfast. I also added a ton more garlic salt and FINALLY it tasted...like food. Not great, but not as bad as before either.
We ate it. And neither of us died. So that's good. But I'd spent about $10 on extra stuff, including the whole bottle of wine the recipe called for, four hours of my life, and almost all of the minimally-allotted brain power I reserve for Sundays, on this less-than-satisfying meal. Boo. And I think I used every pot, pan, bowl, mixing instrument, and wooden spoon in my kitchen! And to top it all off, I don't even have a decent picture of it to post. No matter which way I shot the photo, it just looked like someone threw up red wine and pizza on pile of mashed potatoes! So frustrating. Sigh...you can't win 'em all I guess.

Ice Cream: New Flavors!

Last weekend I invented a couple new ice cream flavors. One was chocolate-banana vanilla, and the other was a dark chocolate-cherry with mascarpone cheese! They both came out pretty good except the ice cream got really hard for some reason...I haven't figured out why yet. Hmmm...what to try next?

Wine Club!

Last night I hosted my sometimes monthly "wine club". A couple years ago a friend of mine got me a set of 24 lectures on wine, and I have (ever so slowly) been making my way through each one. Since there are at least 3 bottles of wine needed for each lecture (to compare and contrast) I thought it best that I not try to go it alone. So every month or so one of the three of us in the "club" host a dinner, and the other two bring the wine! It's very fun, not to mention educational, and I like our small group because it's a very manageable size for planning a dinner. If I had to serve 10 people I think I'd be more hesitant to host, and less inclined to be as creative as I usually am.
This month the lecture was on sparkling wine, and so I tried to prepare my meal to pair with that. Originally I had planned to make something complicated involving three kinds of grilled meat, and do a fancy dessert that included chocolates from the chocolaterie in town, but time and money got in the way of all my grandiose dreams, and so I just made do with what I had, which ended up being much simpler but really perfect for the occasion. It's like they say, sometimes less really is more.
Most of my meal was inspired by my Aunt Pepette in France who showed me how to make more or less everything I served. I changed a few things up, substituted pears for apples, had salad before dinner instead of after etc., but still it pretty much all Aunt Pepette.
So what was on the menu? A tossed mixed green salad with homemade vinaigrette and chicken skewer (and cheese plate on the side), individual Quiche Lorraine/soufflee (quiche without crust), and for dessert homemade crepes with sherry poached pears and dark chocolate! The pears were a total experiment, and so in addition to poaching them in sherry I added cinnamon and vanilla too. They came out pretty tasty I think for my first try, and were really pretty on the plate. I'm going to try to remember what I did and write a recipe for it.
 The only mess up was that I overcooked the chicken because I was trying to clean house and finish dinner at the same time. Other than that I was pleased with how everything came out. And the bubbly was, of course, delicious! All three bottles of it! I took a few photos to share...

I'm Sick :(

I caught a cold. And while it's certainly not the end of the world, it does put quite a damper on things. My throat is all scratchy and my nose is all runny. Anyway, as soon as I got home from work yesterday I put on my pj's and best warm socks, made a pot of "sleepy" tea (i.e. chamomile/mint/lemongrass etc.). Then I made myself a little cocoon out of the chenille blankets on the couch, got my box of Kleenex and watched Horton Hears a Who. I was really craving a bit of comfort food, and I was trying to decide between macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese (which is usually my favorite when I'm sick) and I came up with a brilliant idea. Why not make a grilled macaroni and cheese sandwich? That way my poor little sick brain wouldn't have to decide on one or the other.
I didn't have any mac and cheese at home but the BF brought some home from work, and what a treat! I generally stay away from bread, pasta, processed cheese, and butter, but OMG is it yummy together! I only made a half sandwich (so I wouldn't feel as guilty later:), and it wasn't pretty enough to photograph, but trust me it was delicious! The only improvement I could think of was if I'd had a cup of tomato soup to dip it in.
So next time you find yourself feeling under the weather, try one! It sure made me feel better!

Meet My DNA



I know I've already written several posts today, but you are going to have to humor me with one more. I'd post it tomorrow, but it's so exciting I just can't wait.
It's weird how much of ourselves we've never seen. I'm not talking about that freckle on you left shoulder blade, I'm talking about your brain or heart for example, or a white blood cell or your DNA. In the case of the latter, sure we've heard about it, and we know basically what it is, and we know that we have millions of copies in our bodies, but have you ever actually seen DNA, in "the flesh" so to speak?
Well, I have! And not just any old DNA either, I've actually seen my DNA! I extracted it just a half hour ago, and right in my own kitchen as a matter of fact! It only took the simplest tools and method, and surprisingly it is the same procedure (more or less) that professionals use. Isn't that something?
With nothing more than some salt water, soap, a little alcohol and a few drops of spit, I was able to collect, unwind and view my very own DNA! *sigh* Ain't science grand?
Here are a few pictures of one of the better "strands" that I saw. They are really small, and so quite difficult to photograph. I had to use a combination of hand lens at 10x magnification, and my awesome camera, and even so it is still a little tough to make out. (It wasn't as difficult in real life.) But basically my DNA is the thing that looks like a little piece of string suspended in the liquid inside the circle of the lens. I also have a picture of the entire jar over a light, where you can see much more DNA, but it didn't unwind as well, so it looks like little white specks.  Enjoy!

Crepes A-la-Moi


I had a wonderful weekend full of reading, exercising, cooking, enjoying the great outdoors, shopping and gardening! Yesterday morning I was inspired to experiment with breakfast and ended up with what I consider to be an instant classic! And it's got me written all over it!
It combines some of my favorite food items from local eats with the Mexican fusion style of food (common in California) that has become my culinary medium of late. And to really make it unique I substituted in a little French flair as both a nod to my Aunt (in France who showed me how to make crepes) and to my French heritage.
I made savory crepes stuffed with eggs, chili-lime chicken breast, and breakfast potatoes from the Los Gatos Cafe (which are, in my opinion the very best breakfast potatoes in the universe (or at least our galaxy)), and a little bit of cheese.
Then I topped it off with avocado, and the infamous La Victoria, "orange" sauce, which can only be found at that local taqueria chain here in the Bay area.
 Not only did it look nice, but it was....well, pretty darn good. I can only take credit for the idea though, since I didn't actually make half of it, but oh sweet deliciousness! I think I might make it my go-to recipe for when I have house guests from now on. It would be a nice little "tour-d'Bay" for my visitors all rolled into breakfast!

Ladies, What Do You Think?

I was cruising the internet yesterday looking for some cool tights and I was disappointed by the selection. It seems that most websites/stores only carry designs of flowers (roses especially), lip prints, hearts, butterflies etc, that I find obnoxious. I usually go for the patterns since they are the least annoying, but even those are somewhat overused and boring.
That set me thinking of a business idea. I thought to myself wouldn't it be cool if there was a brand of hosiery that was dedicated to both style and substance? You know, not only something pretty to look at, but also reflecting on who we are as women and what our interests are. I'm not trying to sound all feminist or anything, and I don't have anything against butterflies or lipstick, but at the same time I wouldn't say they represent me as a person. And I think a lot of us (well, that wear tights anyway:) would much rather wear something that was a little more..."us" if we had the option. Just as clothing style speaks to who you are as an individual, the idea would be so can the prints you choose to wear! If you have no idea what I am getting at check out the quick proto-types I put together below and the descriptions. Afterward I'd love to know what you think. (I guess boys can weigh in too if you want:) ANd be honest. Even if you think it's hokey (hooky?hoky?).

E=mc...Hammer?


I'm going to take a quick break  from my France posts (while it's still fresh in my mind) to write a blog about a couple of highlights that I got out of the book we read for my reading group this month. The book was called The God Particle- If the universe is the answer, what is the question? by Leon Lederman.
I have to say that it was a bit of a tough read for me. Not because it was poorly written, but because my mind does not function like that of a mathematician or physicist. (I hear E=mc ___? and I think Hammer, the 1990's, and balloon pants, not the speed of light squared.) That being said I actually got more out of it than any physics textbook I have ever read. But it was still slow going. And I should also note (for honesty sake:) that as of this moment, I've only read half of it. I intend to finish it, but like I said, it might take a while.
Anyway, the book is basically a history of particle physics beginning with the ancient Greeks all the way up to the super colliders of today. There is too much information to do a summary, but there were a couple points I wanted to...well, point out because I thought they were interesting.

1.)The first has to do with one Michael Faraday. He was a self taught physicist, who came from "nothing" and went on to make huge contributions to physics (here is the good part) and he was completely math illiterate! That's right, instead of long complicated equations, he just did experiments (mostly involving magnets and electrical fields), and then described in words what was going on. That's my kind of guy! Schrodinger and Maxwell, and later guys did the math that went along with Faraday's ideas. I just thought that was pretty cool since I too am fairly uninclined toward math. Faraday's biography is a pretty neat one (although a bit over religious for my blood), and a quick look up on Wikipedia will give you a nice summary if you are interested in learning more.

2.)Most of physics, when you move into the 19th century and beyond is crazier sounding than the wackiest science fiction you have ever read. It's beyond mind blowing, because much of it somehow exists in a way or form that our brains don't have the ability to comprehend it. For example, physics tells us that everything has what is called a wave/particle duality, which means that in some ways it acts like a particle of matter, and in some ways it acts like a wave (like ripples on the water or radio wave). Even we are since we are made out of particles of matter! I believe the reason we say it is a combination of these two things, is because it is impossible for us to imagine it as a single state of being that has both the properties of a matter and energy at the same time. It's too "far out" to comprehend. Here are a few other things that are apparently real, but I can't twist my brain around: there are "mathematical points" that actually exist as a real thing in the real world, there are particles that manage to have mass, but no size, or radius. Einstein says that mass is really just the curvature of space/time, so on a certain level everything including our bodies and brains and eyeballs are just a warped area of space and time. Then you have to wonder what is time exactly? And since time started after the Big Bang, then how can you have a time before time? Kooky stuff isn't it? That's why it was so hard to read. I'd go over the text several times thinking I misunderstood, but then I realized no, I'd gotten it right, it was really saying what I thought it was saying. It just made no sense to my macroscopic thinking brain.

3.)Another other thing that really stood out to me (FINALLY!) is why math is so essential to physics. Not the individual long crazy equations themselves, but what those equations, which are basically tools, allow scientists to do, how equations allow scientists to "see" things that they cannot detect by experamentation alone. It's something I'd never thought about before, and it's....totally amazing!
I'll give one example (because it's the  only one I fully understood...ha ha). It has to do with electrons , and I'm really going to make it simple (not for you, but for me:). Here it goes.This physicist named  Paul Dirac noticed that the equation he did to figure out the "electron-wave solution" (whatever that is) had two answers, in the same way that 2 x 2 = 4 but -2 x -2 = 4 does as well. The one solution matched the data he had for the electron. But the the other was a mystery. Basically the math was saying that for every particle there had to be another identical particle but with the opposite charge. The thing to note is, at the time when this equation was proved, physicists didn't have ANY physical evidence of an "antiparticle", or a reason to think one existed. Dirac wasn't quite sure what to do with the second solution. But jump ahead a little in time and lo-and-behold! the positron was discovered, which basically is an electron with a + charge!
The point I'm trying to get at is the math itself is what uncovered the possibility of a positron. It had nothing to do with the scientists, or any direct observation. The math knew it was there before people did! When you do the math, and you plug in values for this or that, the resulting equations tells you if you are right or wrong, on the right track, close but missing something, ignoring an important factor, or whatever. That's how physicists know that there are particles that haven't been discovered yet, and why they are forever hunting for things like Higgs bosons, and dark matter.! It's because when they add up everything we can observe in the universe, the mathematics don't balance out. The math tells them something is missing! Isn't that....pretty freaking cool? And math doesn't lie and it's dependable (well, my math does, but that's because I never do it right (sad face)). More dependable than our senses (as demonstrated by the positron)! But moving on.

4.)I want to take a minute or two to talk about a couple of the implications of Einstein's famous E=mc2 (it should be a "squared" 2, but I don't know how to do a post script in this program) and the Big Bang. E=mc2 (Energy=mass x speed of light squared) says that energy can create matter, and the more energy you have (and the closer to the speed of light you get) the more matter you can create. Have you ever wondered how all the stuff in the universe (including you and I) was suddenly created during the Big Bang out of "nothing"? Well, there was SO much energy in the explosion  that a LOT of matter was made almost instantaneously. That's how the super colliders work. They channel a bunch of eVolts into one particle and see what flies out when the energy, converted into new matter, is almost simultaneously smashed apart. Cool stuff hu? And they've found all kinds of interesting things. Quarks, and leptons, and weak and strong forces, and several other things, none of which I can explain or describe.

Well, I think that about exhausts my understanding of physics and The God Particle. Sorry this blog is a little disjointed. My brain kind of jumps and starts when I delve into math and physics, and so it appears in my writing. If you are interested in reading the book, I absolutely recommend it. The advice I would give is just try to get through it. Don't stop at every single detail that eludes you. If you just read it and understand what you can along the way, the story and the important concepts take shape despite the difficulties and you can still get a lot out of it.

New Flavors: Christmas Classics

Over Christmas holiday we made some experimental ice cream. It was really fun. We had a new flavor almost every night, and everyone got to pitch in both with ideas for flavors and actually making it. Here are a couple of them:

OK,OK, so they aren't really what springs to mind when you're thinking of Yuletide desserts. But what makes them Christmassy is not their flavor. It the fact that we ate them while watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation on Christmas Eve!

Birthday Quilt

So one of my projects a few weeks back was to attempt to make a quilt out of t-shirts for my little brother. I'd been thinking about it since before last Christmas, and had been saving all my favorite t-shirts for the past ten years, and finally I decided I just needed to get it done. It was an experiment, since neither of us has any quilting experience, and a bit of a challenge as well because no two shirts seemed to stretch or sew the same. I wisely enlisted the help of my mom (who has way more patience than I am and doesn't start swearing when we have to undo something sewn backward or upside down.) And we were able to get the whole thing done in one (long) day!

Not only that, but it survived the long journey north to Coldfoot Alaska, and arrived in time for my little bro's birthday last week!

Glowing Kittens

        Well, it was only a matter of time before scientists "made" kittens that glow as well as puppies. These adorable little guys are being used to study feline HIV (which apparently can also infect monkeys). The virus was inserted into the eggs of the mother to see whether the kittens would be immune to feline HIV afterward. In order to tell if the virus actually made the transfer it was tagged (i.e. inserted into the virus) with a bioluminescent gene from jellyfish that would glow under a black light. The 'glow' was used to confirm that the virus indeed made it into the kittens, which is obviously a necessary control on the experiment. Isn't that ingenious? Oh science, you've done it again!

New Flavors

So I am still on my ice cream kick. Thankfully I'm less interested in eating it than I am in creating it. I've been experimenting a little here and there (since my freezer can only hold so much ice cream at a time) and am getting the hang of it I think. I have done a few batches of the usual chocolate/toffee/caramel varieties, and have moved on to trying fresh (seasonal and thus really cheap) fruit, and green tea.
I mentioned in my last ice cream blog that I'd purchased some figs, and was trying to think of something to make with them. Well I did eventually come up with a recipe. It marked my first attempt at a truly a original flavor, and I am happy to say my experiment turned out pretty well. So what flavor was it? It was fresh fig, and goat cheese ice cream! I know, I know, it sounds gross, but trust me it actually tasted much better than it sounds. My mom even took it to a dinner party and everyone there thought it was good (at least that's what she told me:) At any rate my early success has inspired me to come up with some other off the wall flavors to try. I haven't made any of these yet, but here is my "to do" list so far:

  2. Carrot Cake/ Cream Cheese
  3. Country Peach and Sweet Riesling
  4. Dark Chocolate Cabernet
  5. Jasmine Tea and Honey
  6. Zucchini Walnut Cheesecake
  7. Creamy Sherry and Cherry
  8. Fruity Pebbles (Oh yes, I'm doing it!)
  9. White Russian Pound Cake
  10. Lemon Bar and Almond
They all sound good to me, but I am not sure if all of them, or any, will translate well into ice cream. I guess that's the fun of experimenting! I'll keep you posted! Wish me luck!

Can't Beet It


I "painted" this picture of a beet using a beet. Kinda blows your mind when you think about it long enough doesn't it? Don't ask why I decided to draw with vegetables today. It's just the mysterious (and random) way my mind works.
The upper one is how it actually looks, the bottom one is enhanced a little to bring out the organic nature (i.e. little bits and pieces of beet and leaves) of the medium.

I finally roasted a batch of coffee that doesn't taste like sh*t! Wahoo! I am so pleased with myself! Now if only I remembered the kind of beans I used and how long I roasted them for...

Nerds Searching for WIMPs

It is absolutely pouring out right now! And if you trust weather prediction, it's supposed to continue for the next week or so. I am at home warm and dry though. I got all my "chores" done early today, so I am shamelessly sporting my most comfortable (and therefore hideous and mismatched) clothes, drinking my 4th (or 5th?) cup of coffee, and planning on relaxing for the rest of the day, and enjoying the rainy weather.

Anyway, I read an article in the January issue of Popular Science that I thought was interesting about what physicists call "dark matter". I think that even if we don't know what term means, most of us have at least heard it before, either on shows like Star Trek, or some or another documentary about space. But if you are anything like me beyond the actual words themselves we are lost. Anyway, the article I read was great in that it didn't overly complicate what is (with certainty) a very complicated subject. (BTW it is the source for most of what I am going to write about.) In essence it dumbed down one of the greatest mysteries in modern physics to a level that my pitiful brain could process. And since I found it so interesting I wanted to pass it along to you. My plan is to give you a quick and dirty rundown on what dark matter is...or isn't actually.

You would think, because so many people (mostly physicists) theorize about dark matter, write articles about it, build machines to detect it, and spend millions (or probably billions) of dollars researching it, that dark matter would actually exist. But it turns out that would be in incorrect assumption. Surprisingly, as of right now, dark matter does NOT technically exist. Isn't that about the weirdest thing you've ever heard?  Not one particle of dark matter has ever been seen or directly measured by man! Not a one!
This begs the obvious question; "Then why do we think they exist in the first place?" At first glance you might be inclined to lump dark matter in the same category as God and Allah. But unlike the later, scientists have a very good reason to believe dark matter exists. And I'll try my best to explain it to you.

OK, so Newton (Sir Issac, not Wayne) came up with his second law of planetary motion 1687 that basically says the bigger (read "more mass") something is the faster it spins. For example the length of our day is 24 hours, while the length of a day on Jupiter is about 10 hours. Jupiter spins faster because it has more mass. There is a relationship between the mass of Jupiter and it's rate of rotation that can be worked out mathematically. That is to say that you can use math to predict (with excellent accuracy) how fast some heavenly body will rotate if you know what it's mass is. Or the other way around.

Well, back in the 1930's while observing a group of galaxies, one Fritz Zwicky realized that the rate of rotation (which can be measured by an objects Doppler Shift) of the galaxies he was looking at didn't add up to the number of stars that he was able to observe. Basically they were turning much faster than they should be. Based on Newtons second law those galaxies were missing a great deal of mass. The conclusion was that there MUST be more mass in those galaxies than science was capable of observing. It had to be there, we just couldn't see it directly. And thus "dark matter" was born.
In a way it's like observing the circular ripples on the surface of a smooth pond, but never having observed the stone that was tossed in that created them. You see the ripples and you know something had to make them. The spin of galaxies, and the way light is bent around certain regions of seemingly empty space are the ripples, and physicists are now looking for the stone, the actual particle of dark matter itself. And that is a daunting task. How do you look for something when you don't know what you are looking for? To continue with the analogy what if it's not a stone? It could be potato, or it could be another drop of water...who knows?

So how do you look for dark matter? Well, here's where it gets tricky. Scientist think that dark matter is really made up of what they call "weakly interacting massive particles" or WIMPs. This means that they barely interact with what we could call "normal" particles, but that they still have a mass (otherwise they couldn't affect the spin of the galaxies remember more mass=faster spin). I think the acronym is a bit ironic because, as Neil deGrasse Tyson says "85% of the gravity comes from something [and] we don't know what it is!" Eight five percent of everything in the universe doesn't seem very wimpy to me. Anyway physicists are taking two approaches to discover these WIMPs. One was is to create a detector that would capture the result of a head on collision of a WIMP and a regular particle. These devices are housed in old mine shafts and under mountains to discourage false readings by normal particles that bombard the earth every millisecond of every day. The other (as is being attempted at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland) is to try to make WIPMs ourselves by smashing protons together hard and fast enough. These facilities are also (I believe) underground. Bizarre isn't it?

It may sound like science-fiction to toss around terms like dark matter and WIMPs. It may seem crazy to look for something that as far as we know doesn't exist. But the "ripples" that physicists observe out in space must have been created by something. And I'll bet we discover dark matter before God appears and tells us it was him.

Lotus Root

I bet you thought I'd given up on my root experiment. Well, you are wrong! It's just taking me FOREVER to get through them all. Anyway, I got something called lotus root from a sketchy little produce shop in Chinatown up in San Francisco.
Since it's an Asian root I decided to make a stir fry with it. I read on line that you have to peel it, and once you slice it the slices should be dropped in a bowl of vinegar water to keep the root from turning an ugly brown color. (It's similar to how a potato turns yucky colors if you leave them sit out.)
My favorite thing about the lotus root is it's amazing shape when sliced. It's really beautiful, and unusual, and I think it adds a really neat visual element to any stir fry. The root is oblong, and when sliced forms little circles, with even smaller circles within.
Texturally it's similar to a mix between a raw potato and a water chestnut. There isn't a whole lot of inherent flavor, and it's got a crunchy, starchy taste/texture to it. Even after it's cooked it retains the crunchiness. In fact now that I think about it, if you had a recipe that called for water chestnuts, lotus root would be a viable alternative, and make the dish much more exotic looking.
Anyway, I sauteed the root, then added the usual stir fry ingredients and let everything simmer together for a while doused in soy sauce and fresh chopped ginger. It wasn't a recipe really, just a bunch of veggies, some steak, and my lotus root.
Mixed with the stir fry the root turned brown (because of the soy sauce I think) but it still looked pretty cool. I left the wheels whole because I thought it looked more cool, but it was pretty impractical as each slice had to be eaten in at least two bites (so I would recommend quartering them unless the root was really small). Over all I think they were OK tasting. It was basically like eating a half cooked potato covered in soy sauce. It wasn't bad, or offensive at all, but I wasn't head over heals for it either. That being said, I'd probably pick up a lotus root every so often just because of how exotic it looks, and mix it in with my Asian cooking. It's something I think would impress those who have never had it. I also think it would make amazing amuse bouche (individual appetizers) because of it's unusual shape.Or how about chips?!? Wouldn't that be cool? I have never heard of lotus root chips, but I bet they'd be delicious since they are so potato like...Maybe I'll try that next.
In closing, if you like Asian cooking and do it often, I think it would be well worth your while to give this a try. Lotus root won't change the flavor of your dish, but it sure will make it look good! I don't think I would recommend it at all if not for it's shape, and that may seem like a silly reason to eat something, but then again maybe not. It's fun.

Snowboarding: How Hard Can It Be?

Two weekends ago I (along with friends) hit the slopes in Reno NV and decided to learn how to snowboard. I knew it wouldn't be the simplest thing to learn, but I honestly thought "How hard could it be?" I have gone skiing and picked that up OK, and I think in general I have a fairly good sense of balance...what else is there?
Ha! I learned that the hard way. It's not as easy as it looks. At least not for me who has never done any skate boarding or surfing. There were a couple factors that contributed to my overall total demise. One thing was there were way too many people on the practice hill. It was like an obsticle course with folks just sitting down in the middle of the slope catching their breath or taking a break. I ran into more people than I can count. A couple were our snowboard instructor and  a little kid that was probably six or seven years old! (I have a bruise on my butt in the shape of the bottom of his ski pole to prove it.)
The second thing was that we only had one day there, so I tried hills that I probably wasn't ready for because I knew I wouldn't have the chance otherwise. And I guess I was a little peer pressured into it. It was a disaster. I literally fell down that entire hill. It wasn't one giant fall, but about 20 small ones. I hit my head several times, slid over some tree roots on my back (got an expecially tough looking bruise/scratch from that one), and did the splits more than once. I fell backward, forward, sideways, I landed on my hip, shoulder, back and both my knees are bruised. It was brutal. I fell more in that one day than I have in the past ten years!
To be honest a part of me felt like quitting the first time I hit my head (I hit it hard a total of 4 times). My hat actually flew off my head I went down so hard. It looked pretty funny I'm sure, it even made me laugh, even though it was pretty painful. But I decided to stick it out. I have often wondered at the way football players dive to the turf over and over again. I have this strange curiosity about how it would feel to fall ground without using your hands to brace yourself. And to do it 20 or 30 times in a row. So with some apprehension, but also with a bit of morbid curiosity, I kept getting up and trying again. I know it's not quite the same thing, but I'd say falling down a mountain is at least generally comparable to playing a game of football. I wanted to know if I could be as tough as a football player, and I wanted to know what it felt like to be one.
After a day of experimentation the conclusion I reached was I'm probably tough enough to play in one football game. But if you told me I had to do it every Sunday I'd  probably cry. It turns out that diving (or in my case falling) to the ground over and over HURTS...A LOT. I don't mean the actual fall hurts that much, because it's one of those things where if you just get up and shake it off the pain actually goes away pretty quickly. It's more the feeling that overcomes you if you sit down for a couple minutes (at any point after repeated contact with the ground) and try to get up again. If you keep moving you are OK, but if you sit down it's all over. I got up after sliding ten feet down the hill and was fine, but when I went to use the restroom I thought someone might have come in and peel me off the toilet because my legs were suddenly in revolt!
And the stiffness and soreness was so much worse and complete than I ever thought it could be. When I imagined how I'd feel afterward I was only taking into account the muscles I knew I had. I had totally neglected to include the 200 other muscles that up until my snowboarding experience had apparently never been used. I felt like a stranger in my own body. I discovered a muscle in my hip I didn't know was there and somehow made it hard to put shoes on, and one behind my right ear that, for three days, sent shooting pain down my neck whenever I smiled. I had a weird fatigue in the muscle on top of my foot that burned when I would push and ease up on the gas pedal in my car. It was bizarre. And it took me a  week to recover!
But...while my first snowboarding adventure turned out to be more or less a bust, I haven't lost hope that some day I'll find myself whizzing down a mountain on a snowboard and having a fun old time. Next time I go I'm just going to do things a little differently. I might wear a football helmet for one. I might go on a less busy day too. Even though I have spent the last 10 minutes complaining about all the aches and pains, in my mind it was a really good experience. The whole thing during, and after, was very interesting to me. It was all worth it. And you want to know why? Because I came away with one (and only one) shot of me looking like a bad-ass snowboarding queen! Hell yeah! The victory is MINE!

Picking Apart a Crab


 My littlest brother has been in town for the last two weeks on his way to an adventure. I just dropped him off at the airport this morning for his flight to Alaska where he will be living for the next 4 months. We did lots of fun things while he was here, hiking, shopping, going out to eat, watching football etc. We also (my idea) bought a Dungeness crab from the grocery store to dissect on my kitchen counter one afternoon. It was really fun. We probably weren't as careful as a real carcinologist, and our tools were much more primitive, but it was still fun and really interesting. We were able to get a closer look at the mouth, gills, and reproductive apparatus. And although we never did find the heart, we discovered two glands(?) that look like bunched up spaghetti in the inner most reaches of the carapace. Yummm.
In preparation for our dissection I did a little reading up on Dungeness crabs, and learned some really interesting things. (For a more complete description click here for the paper by the US Fish and Wildlife Services.) Here are a few fun facts I thought I'd share:

Dungeness Crab:
Scientific name: Cancer magister Dana
Habitat: Off the coast of Central California to the Gulf of Alaska
Zoea
  • Only male crabs are allowed to be caught for commercial sale.
  • A female can lay up to 5 million eggs in her lifetime, with each  brood producing 1 to 2 million eggs!
  • Baby crabs spend the first portion of their lives as zoea and float around in the ocean currents like plankton. They are tiny (about the size of the tip of a pencil) and don't look anything like a crab, with a beak and giant eyes.
  • Dungeness crabs are some of the most "meaty" crabs with approximately 25% edible parts by weight.

Sweet Potato or Imposter?

I have trying to get back into my root experiment, and just yesterday I decided to tackle the sweet potato...only I am not sure that I didn't end up buying yams instead. The label at the grocery store said "sweet potato" but there were yams close by, and when I got home and cut them open they were more yellow and less orange than I had anticipated. I still don't know what they were. Anyway, I guess we will just assume they were sweet potatoes unless I figure out differently.
I found a (simple) recipe on line for making sweet potato fries. I thought that was a good a way as any to give a food I hated as a kid another try. So I washed and cut the potato, then tossed it into a ziplock bag with olive oil, salt, brown sugar, cumin, chili powder and a pinch of cayanne, and baked them at  425 for about a half hour.
I followed the recipe, but if I had to do it over I would change several things. First of all, I would only brush the fries with oil, and then sprinkle the spice mixture over top. They were super greasy, and the oil smoked in the oven and I had to pat all the fries dry after I cooked them. I left them in a little too long in hopes that they would get crispy (they were really limp) but they burned before that ever happened. I guess the only way to really get crispy fries is to deep fry them..sigh...
Anyway, whatever root they were they made OK fries. The taste was good (but a little oily), and if they hadn't been in the shape of a french fry that looked like it should be eaten with fingers, their lack of crunchiness wouldn't have been a factor at all (Like maybe if I had cut them into rounds, like potatoes au gratin. In fact if I ever cook them again, that is what I'll do.). Prep time was almost nothing, and I thought it paired really well with the sole sandwich and cilantro lime mayo I had for dinner.
Over all I give the sweet potato...or yam...2.5 out of 5 stars. It was easy to cook. It didn't taste as bad as I remember, but I don't think it will be a flavor I crave. The mixture of brown sugar and cumin was interesting and worked really well with the sweetness of the root, but at the end of the day I'd much rather have a baked potato.
